Global Peace is an initiative launched from the global south, by ACCORD, a Civil Society Organisation and Global Think Tank with 27 years of experience working to resolve conflicts on the continent. Through this experience, ACCORD identified that peace cannot be sustained without development. In 2018, ACCORD took the next step and is extending its experience globally through this new entity: Global Peace.

It is an ecosystem for ideas, innovators, influencers, investors and implementers to harness twenty-first century creativity and innovation to bring practical, implementable and cost-effective solutions to global challenges that have local and global consequences – as well as enhancing conflict prevention and strengthening the global multi-lateral system.

This episode is hosted in partnership with the Youth for Peace Africa Program (Y4P), as a prelude to an Inter-Generational Dialogue Series we are co-convening that will examine the key cross-cutting issues identified by the Continental Framework for Youth, Peace and Security (CFYPS) as having an impact on the effective involvement of youth in peace and security in Africa, namely; capacity building, inclusivity, gender mainstreaming, communication and knowledge management. This Coffee with ACCORD episode aims to begin building understanding of these cross-cutting issues and how they impact the YPS agenda. This episode is inspired by the work ACCORD and Y4P, and all the other local, national, regional and continental actors, are doing towards strengthening the youth, peace and security agenda on the continent.

In this eighth episode of Coffee with ACCORD, we speak to the esteemed former Algerian diplomat, Ambassador Said Djinnit, Senior Political Advisor at ACCORD, and Former Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Great Lakes region in Africa. Amb. Djinnit speaks to us about his recent policy and practice brief (PPB), titled “Unconstitutional Changes of Government: A Review of the AU Policy Framework.” In his paper, Amb. Djinnit explains the African Union (AU) policy on dealing with unconstitutional changes of government (UCG) and how it has generated countless debates, especially in light of the recent wave of coups d’état in Africa, including in Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea, prompting the conviction that for any organisation to move forward, it needs to pay special attention to its institutional memory and past experiences.

The PPB can be found here: https://www.accord.org.za/publication…
